I know a person.  I’ve known her all my life.  I have always thought she was a loving and fun loving, a kind person with a big heart.  She welcomes almost all friends to her door.  She has always been a bit bigoted.

She began emailing my neighbor, years ago before Facebook and all the networking sites started up.  By e-mail she became a long lost friend to my neighbor.  And, she was.  She would have done anything for my neighbor.  She used to be a friend to all.

I don’t know what has happened to her over the years, nor how her heart has filled with so much hatred.

Lately, she has taken to forwarding political apps on Facebook.  They are the cruelest, most illogical, often bigoted, bits of hatred you can find.  They are pictures reminiscent of the old time Little Black Sambo era, where watermelon was a code for race and excuse for hatred.

She is a flag-waving American and proud of it.  She is proud of this country and all that created it.  I guess that even includes “All men are created equal,” but I’m not sure she remembers that part.  She is also a Christian, and yet she seems to have forgotten the “Do unto others as you would have them do until you.”  Right now, she just spouts hate.

I did not realize how much seeing it was affecting me every day, until someone else I knew mentioned they had blocked or removed her because they were tired of it.

Today, I blocked this “dear” person.  I don’t mean to abandon her, if she is slipping.  I don’t mean to offend her.  I just cannot take it anymore and today, when I checked my Facebook and all that was on was teenagers writing poems and pictures of little children from relatives, not someone using the word Stupider to show how bright Sarah Palin is, I was happy again.  I no longer had to see her spouting a belief that I will never agree with, no matter how much she tries to cram it down my throat.

You cannot force someone else to believe in your religion by sending four apps a day of “the daily picture of Jesus” or whatever else they have, and you cannot change their politics by belittling the political leaders that they believe in.  It is insulting and only stirs up bile.  If you wish to blog your beliefs, that is fine.  I can choose to read or not read your blog.  But, there should be different rules on a site like Facebook.  There should be a rule for being civil and not cruel.  There should be respect for other people’s beliefs, without trying to cram your own down their throat.

Let’s get back to a little bit of civility.

69.8 million families, in this United States, live on Social Security and/or Federal Pension.  Those checks cover anywhere from one to —— people/adults and children in a family.

IF OUR government cannot get its act together, 69.8 million families will not get a check (and that includes the military) on the Third of August.  What will happen????

1. First, no direct deposit or card to pay that money.

2. No deposit, EQUALS, no money to pay the mortgage, utilities, doctors, gasoline, car repairs, house repairs, food, school clothing, book rental.  For one month, we will sit in our HOT homes (my husband has COPD and by the end of the month will most likely be in the hospital.) opening bank statement overdraft fees, and mortgage late payments, and, after the freezer is all melted, canned goods.  Not to speak of the student loan that I could not cancel the automatic withdrawal on in time.  That would certainly rank under the mortgage, if I could have.

3.  The end of the month will see us walking three miles away to have a free dinner at Mother’s Cupboard, well some of us.  My husband could not walk that length even in 70 degree weather.

4.  I will cancel the MRI for my possible crushed disc, in my back that is causing intense cyatic pain.

5.  We will not order medicine that we run out of.

6.  We already cancelled our land line but have a contract on the cell, so I guess they just turn it off without payment, but you still owe it.

7. What happens to your health and life insurance premiums?  I think I have two months before I am in default and lose my health insurance.

8.  Our income is already under $20,000 a year.  We have a nineteen year old with one more semester of high school, long story, he wasn’t being homeschooled when we took him, so he had problems.  One boy was just deployed to Afghanistan and one boy is working in food service and paying his own student loans and gas and food bills.

9.  Just wanted to give you a taste of our world.

MY PROPOSAL:

Every single one of those families need to write to every Congressman, senator, tea party, republican and democrat and send them a bill for the actual and mental damages when this happens.  Maybe that will wake them up.  Do you know a good Class Action lawyer?

If you have any doubt left in your mind or heart about the Egyptian people, consider this:

  1. They did not sit home and complain and gripe.
  2. They did not get violent and destroy other people’s property, or loot stores, or burn cars.
  3. What they did was fairly peaceably let their government know that they had enough and they were not going to take it anymore.
  4. What they did, was to protect property, including the museum’s property, from the small minority of violent jerks.
  5. And, what are they doing now?

They are cleaning Tahrir square.  They have taken their country back and are doing something positive for their country.

Gee, sounds just like the American’s doesn’t it?????

Last time I went to the theatre, no one even bothered taking their own cup and popcorn trash with them.  There was more garbage on the floors than in Tahrir square and they left it for the owner to clean.

How often have you seen civil discourse, in America, turn into riot and property destruction?

How many of your relatives are sitting on their butts and complaining about “Obamacare,” without trying to find an answer for those who cannot afford health care?  How many of them “just say no” rather than learning a new word, like “compromise?”

But, you know what???? The Egyptians did it.  IT WORKED!!!!  Congratulations, people of Egypt.  You are one classy lot of people.

Brown County decided to give the kids the day off , from school, for Martin Luther King, Jr., day.  Apparently, we have not used up our snow day allotment, so JCountry is sound asleep, where he prefers to be at 10 a.m.  He is one of those kids who does well on the two-hour delay days, but not so well when he has to catch a bus at 7:30 a.m.

Not to give away my age or anything, but I was a teen in the 60s.  I still have a copy of my letter from President Eisenhower in response to my complaint that it is just stupid that people hated other people because of the color of their skin and he needed to do something about it.  I’m sure I was very polite though, as children of the 50’s were always very polite.  Sometimes, overly polite, like Eddie Haskell polite.  And, if you don’t know who Eddie Haskell is, well, I guess you weren’t there.

I attended a fairly large school, address Gary, Indiana, called Calumet High School.  I do not know what the facts or figures are, but it ranged from Doctor’s children to children who barely had a home.  It also had a good number of African Americans and Latinos.  This is unlike the school JCountry attends, which (I am guessing here) has less than five non-Anglos in attendance.

My lab partner was an African American girl and I will never forget the day I sat down at our lab table and looked over to see her, head on crossed arms, crying.  That was the first I knew that we were going to have riots.  She told me that some of the kids hated her because she was black.  I was appalled.  I mean, out of all the things in life that you have a choice of, the color of your skin is not one of them.  I comforted her, as best as someone who has not walked in her skin could.

At lunch, I was hit and yelled at by a black student, who I did not know.  By the time we went home on the bus, school was closed.  I think we had three days off to let things settle down and probably let the teacher’s regroup.

I have never understood how people can hold so much hate in their hearts as to hate another person for such a dumb reason.  Nor, how the same people who honor and revere someone like Michael Jordan, can turn around and hate everyone else whose skin is darker than theirs.

This blog post does not circle back around to the opening.  It has no answers for the question.  I wish I did.  I have learned though, that you cannot change people’s minds much.  If they want to hate someone because they are black, they will.  If they want to hate their President, they will.  If they want to believe every stupid rumor they will.  I just wonder — what can make a person learn to think for themselves and not believe every stupid rumor they hear, no matter how illogical it is.

To all Sci Fi fans out there.  You better hope there is NO other intelligent life in space.  If there is.  If they find us.  If they come down and begin coating our world with some guey substance so that our wildlife and our ecological system is all mucked up.  Then they sit back on their backsides and wait until we are drowning in this gue.

Well, if that happens, do not expect a speedy response.

You will have to wait for a counter-attack on approval with the state agency, the coastal agency, the federal agency, and those same aliens, before our government does anything to protect us.

Something is so wrong with this picture?

I have been quiet lately because I feel I have nothing to contribute to what is happening in the world.

I sit here, with food and water and medical care, at least until March 31st, and am still frustrated by the length of time it takes to get aid to someone in this “modern” world.

It is a time when our words can circle the globe in a matter of mili-seconds and yet a bottle of water takes five days to arrive.  This disaster of all disasters will perhaps be the launching ground for a new hope of recovery for future disasters.  We watched Katrina and said, “This should never happen again.” Yet, here is another country suffering without water, care and food.

Some think tank needs to sit down and figure out an answer.  Nature will always have a hand to deal to us and we need to be better prepared.

Perhaps we need a league of ships stationed and manned by alternating countries, so that rescue equipment, personnel (medical and rescue), food and water are within one to three days of every port.

That is the third thing I have thought of but the solutions have so many snags, even in my mind, that I am not certain what can be done.

That is why I have been quiet lately.

My hope and thoughts are with the Haitians, here and in Haiti.

It seems to me that we have become a society that values people behaving badly. What else accounts for: Bridezillas, Bad Girls, Bad Party Girls, John & Kate, the children the nanny tries to rehabilitate, Housewives of the Amazon (or wherever they happen to be living and fighting now), and all the reality shows where people yell at each, while the camera watches.

It used to be that behavior like that was a reason to be ashamed.  Now, it seems encouraged.

We have become a nation that loves to watch brats; brats of all ages.  Hence, recently the big news was the soccer player who was repeatedly filmed abusing other players.  Her excuse, “That’s not me.  I’m not like that.”  Okay, who was in your body?  Because, people who know you certainly think it is you.

I am so totally sick of people yelling and screaming at each other because they just “know” what is right and you do not.  What happened with negotiation and meeting in the middle and listening?  I have to wonder what is going to force us to realize that this is a very slippery slope to head down.

I love Project Runway and have really enjoyed the last couple of seasons where they did NOT have the one or two people who like to make life miserable for everyone else.  The only liar was out as soon as he opened up with that big lie.  There was only one who liked to put the others down, in a big way, but all-in-all it was a pleasant season.  And, what is wrong with that?

What is wrong with being civilized?
